Dear Readers,
Stocks rose on Tuesday following a positive shift sparked by dovish comments from certain Federal Reserve officials. Investors are eagerly anticipating significant economic data and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's upcoming speech later this week.
November has seen the S&P 500 surge by 8.5%, positioning it for its fourth most substantial monthly increase in the last ten years. The crucial focus for investors lies in the release of the core personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed's favored inflation gauge, scheduled for Thursday.
A decrease in inflation indicators will likely bolster traders' confidence that the Federal Reserve has finished its rate hikes and will prompt a growing call for rate cuts to commence earlier in 2024.
Given these circumstances, Powell's upcoming fireside chat at Spelman College in Atlanta on Friday will be closely observed for any hints regarding the central bank's future strategies and mindset.
At 11:44 AM ET, the Dow was up 177.9102 points, or 0.5035%, at $35511.38. The Nasdaq Composite added 64.4736 points, or 0.4039%, at $16026.454. The S&P 500 rose 16.6797 points, or 0.3666%, at $4567.11. Among the 11 major S&P 500 sectors, 9 showed positive movement, with Materials leading the way with a 0.74% increase.
