Stocks are tumbling today after President Trump announced over the weekend new tariffs—25% on Canada and Mexico, and 10% on China—while also signaling that European tariffs are on the way. These measures, set to take effect on Tuesday, raise concerns about a potential trade war that could slow global economic growth. In response, both Canada and Mexico have announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.
As of 11:33 AM ET, the Dow was down -75.6 points, or -0.16972%, at $44469.06. The Nasdaq Composite lost -172.748 points, or -0.8043%, at $21305.299. The S&P 500 declined -39.1 points, or -0.64729%, at $6001.43. Among the 11 major S&P 500 sectors, 11 showed positive movement, with Utilities leading the way with a 3.77% increase.
Goldman Sachs has cautioned that U.S. stocks could drop by as much as 5% due to the impact on corporate earnings, while RBC Capital Markets projects declines ranging between 5% and 10%.
The concern is that these tariffs will drive up costs on essentials like groceries and electronics, increasing expenses for American households. This, in turn, could put upward pressure on inflation, which has been easing since peaking three summers ago. Persistently high or rising inflation might prevent the Federal Reserve from continuing its rate-cutting strategy, which began in September to help stimulate the U.S. economy.
