U.S. stocks fell sharply on Friday after a weaker-than-expected August jobs report, increasing expectations of upcoming interest rate cuts.

The S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq all declined around 0.7%–0.8%. Only 22,000 jobs were added in August—well below forecasts—while the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, and prior months were revised downward, showing the weakest job growth since the pandemic.

This was the first jobs report following President Trump’s dismissal of the BLS chief. Markets now fully anticipate a Fed rate cut in September, possibly by 50 basis points, as Treasury yields dropped sharply.
